Oh, that's another similarity with older Italian (up to, say, 40 / 50 years ago), people could say anything about anybody, as long as they added "con rispetto parlando"  ("respectfully speaking") - "Respectfully speaking, he's a moron."

LOL, the American version of that is "no offense."
"You have the brains of a flamingo, no offense."

The Wisconsin version: "I'm not saying he's a dolt, buuuuut...."

The Kanye West version: "Now I ain't saying she a gold digger, but...." (No need to finish!)

Nice!  Let's start the lessons     ;-P

OK...First lesson:  We're not being nice or sympathetic when we say "Bless your heart."  We're really saying, "Awww, that dummy is too stupid to know how much they just messed up."  If you're not from here, and someone tells you, "bless your heart," think quickly about what you just said to them prior to this.  LOL!!   ;D

Using this correctly AND not being from here will impress and scare those around you.  HAHAHAHA!!

In the South, you can say anything insulting about anyone as long as you end it with, "Bless their heart."

Exactly!!  :)

In any case, it's really strange how something so similar could develop in two different countries and cultures  o___O

Yes it is!!  Guess we all have to deal with the "blessed" ones.   ::)

I think "just sayin'" is the new phrase where you can insult someone, just as long as you finish it with, "just sayin'".

Around here it is usually when a sentence begins with "Now I don't want you to take this the wrong way."

I wonder if one could fit all of the above into one sentence...     "Now I don't want you to take this the wrong way, bless your heart, I ain't saying you're a gold digger, but... no offense, just sayin'."  I mean, you'd be saying a lot, but you'd come out clean even in a courtroom...

I think Mac & Jake nailed it!!   ;D

Just to add another... you know you're in trouble if my mom starts out with, "Can I make a suggestion?"

There's no Italian equivalent for this:  Italian mothers - with all due exceptions - do not make suggestions, they impose suggestions, whether by moral blackmail or sheer, obsessive, highly destructive repetition...  but then, 99% of Italian sons are so morbidly attached to their mothers that they never grow up enough to stand their ground anyway.  (sorry if this sounds bitter, but this really is one of the things I despise about my country...)

I understand completely.  I have known a couple of American men with Italian mothers, and I've noticed what you're talking about.

Suffice it to say that there are a lot (and I mean A LOT) of people here who marry somebody they do not love because if they didn't their parents would be oh so very disappointed...
