ST152: Two from The Strange Dr. Weird
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:24:36 AM »
I hadn't heard from Dr. Weird before, and, I must say, I quite enjoyed these goofy little stories. Maybe it was the snide way the Dr. dealt with the adman's interruption, and maybe it was the mad-science angle of the first tale, but I'm left believing twelve-year-old me would have thought this series the best ever.

these really are quite nice despite the 15 minute format - a good cast. Produced by Robert Arthur and David Kogan, and based on scripts from the Mysterious Traveler. They even got the Traveler, Maurice Tarplin, to play Doctor Weird.

I like the Dr. Weird stories especially when you want a good story without having to invest a lot of time into it.

On one of the episodes they had a "letter" asking about the 15 minute format. I've heard 29 episodes (I don't know if there are any more) of the series and that question was posed in one of the first few episodes.

If my sources are correct the series ran from November 1944 to May 1945.

I found the show to be hit-or-miss, some were quite good - while others not so much...

The 15 minute format only works for me if it is a weekly serial, like Superman o4 Johnny Dollar, and then only when I listen to a few in a row. I've heard some 15 Dr. Weirds and  they are not bad, but 15 does not serve them well in my book.

Agreed, though it depends on the tale  -  I'd still rather it too short than the sort of filling CBSRMT sometimes gets up to.

If you heard someof the recent Twilight Zone radio versions, the filler can drive you totally insane.

I finally got around to listening to some of these. I liked them. Like anything, it depends on the story and delivery. I have listened to bad ones that kept my attention because of the actors. Although part of me enjoys the over dramatic.

I quite agree on this. I've heard all the episodes of the show I could find (I found 29). It varies from episode-to-episode about the show - some are quite good, while others are pretty bad.

Jim has posted six episodes on his show/podcasts - two each time. You can find them here:

To appreciate radio drama or in this case, melodrama, you have to understand that kids who may have listened to these programs, and even some adults, were not as street smart as the kids of today.  They were willing to play the "Let's Pretend" game even if they knew that it was only a story.  After all, they didn't know that the sounds they were hearing were actually manufactured sound effects.  No bones were being crushed, or throats slit.  Dr. Weird"s narration was no different than the spook show host on TV.  Except you can see this guy and see that it is just a gag. I believe that Strange Dr. Weird aired on Tuesday nights at 7:15 pm over Mutual.  Not sure what program followed, but I think it was the Green Hornet. Lone Ranger was Mon-Wed-Fri at 7:30 p.m.
