This FM&M is too good to pass up . . .
« on: March 21, 2013, 08:29:41 PM »
Okay, this Fibber McGee and Molly line is too good to pass up:

In the May 28, 1946 episode, McGee's Wedding Anniversary, Molly McGee has just seen the governor, an old beau, pass by while she is talking to someone outside the beauty shop. She says that she likely would have married him if she hadn't married Fibber. Then she says, "Ah, lucky me."

The woman she is talking to comments, you mean you wouldn't have wanted to be the wife of the governor?

She says, no, it would be too much etiquette. "I wouldn't know which knife to use for the filet mignon and which one to use on the politicians."

Yes!  That most certainly is a Tardis.   8)   More specifically, it's a Tardis coffee mug with removable top.  I was inspired by a co-worker who actually has one.

Dr. Who is supposed to return to BBC America in five more days.  Yay!

Awesome!  I really need to get back into it.  I've watched a lot of the older episodes and some of the new ones, but I need to watch them in some sort of discernible order.

David, as far as I know it was a reboot that was started about six or seven years ago. They have already gone through two doctors and are on their third, now I don't know how many doctors that makes (11?) There is also a spinoff called Torchwood which was decent at the beginning.

Janece, I have that mug as well, a gift. I also have a couple of sonic screwdrivers, journals, and another mug in which the Tardis moves depending on how hot the beverage inside is. I like playing with it when I wash it. Yes, I am a bit of a five year old inside and a nerd. But a proud one. The only thing I don't have is any DVD sets. I have been watching it on BBC America and Netflix, although I am a couple of seasons behind, basically rarely seeing any with Matt Smith as the Doctor. On a side note he was in a series based off of a Phillip Pullman series where is costar was Billie Piper (aka Rose.)

And I need to listen to more Fibber McGee...the flying saucer episode was great.

And now I end this ramble.

My co-worker has the cup that changes with warm liquid also.  Really cool!  I find I need a sonic screwdriver several times during the day, as well as the psychic paper.  They would come in handy.

I think I can clear up some of these "Doctor Who" questions.

The original series started in 1963 and ran until until it's final episode in 1989.

In 1996 there was a TV-movie that was a continuation of the original series, but it didn't do well so plans for doing the series again were shelved.

However in 2005 The world got a new series of "Doctor Who" which continued on the story. This series still goes on now - in fact new episodes begin airing on Saturday.

Now let's fill in some gaps!

During the break after the original series went off the air and the TV-movie was aired there were books to fill the void  featuring the Doctor at that time (7th Doctor - Sylvester McCoy). In the movie some time had passed and the Doctor had been travelling alone for a while, but roughly 30 minutes in we see the regeneration scene into the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann).

Since it didn't take off as a series there were books made featuring him as the Doctor, but when the series returned in 2005 they had decided not to do a regeneration scene with Paul McGann because it was felt that new viewers would have trouble understanding what was happening (since so much was happening here) so they left little hints that he might have recently regenerated in the story and continued the story on from there.

Now with the new series there was talk of a "Time-war" with the daleks that had led to his regeneration, but we've never seen it in books or TV so that will probably remain as an "unseen story".  But regardless the series continued on and now we are about to return to the season with a new companion. with the current Doctor (Matt Smith - the 11th Doctor).

So now the rundown is like this:
1st Doctor - William Hartnell
2nd Doctor - Patrick Troughton
3rd Doctor - Jon Pertwee
4th Doctor - Tom Baker
5th Doctor - Peter Davison
6th Doctor - Colin Baker
7th Doctor - Sylvester McCoy
8th Doctor - Paul McGann
9th Doctor - Christopher Eccleston
10th Doctor - David Tennant
11th Doctor - Matt Smith

.. and in closing the and answer to your question, David, it not new versions of the original but a continuing of the series.

Hope that clears up many of your questions. :)
